Director, Parish Day School Job Description

St. James Vision for this position: The Director of St. James’ Parish Day School will work in partnership with the Rector in ministry to the school to provide a child friendly, safe, age appropriate educational and God centered environment. Educational leadership and partnership will be exhibited in primary relationship with teachers, aides, other school staff, students, parents of our school children and secondarily as a member of the church staff.  Leadership, vision, financial accountability, follow through, understanding the needs of children, maturity, flexibility, and sensitivity are required for this position.

More explicitly, in terms of the Director this position requires the following:

  1. Responsibility for the operation of the school, including but not limited to hiring and evaluation of staff, maintaining current employment records with documentation of required classes for licensing and insurance purposes, monitoring the school budget and assisting with budget development for the next school year.
  2. Serving as liaison between the school, parents, students, teachers and the church, including the Parent Association.
  3. Overseeing lesson plans, preparation of materials for instructional activities, regular scheduling of and attendance at faculty meetings.
  4. Oversees the Parent Association.
  5. Regular consultation with the Rector regarding matters pertaining to the school.
  6. Attendance at monthly church staff meetings when school is in session, professional meetings, and vestry meetings when invited to give a report by the Rector.
  7. Planning and staffing for Day School Chapel, the After School Program and classes, Open House, Preschool Sunday and other special events, as well as supervision of student activities and the playground.
  8. Other duties as may be assigned from time to time in connection with the operation of the school and the carrying out of its programs.
  9. Occasional classes may be offered by the Director to parents of the school and church related to child development and parenting.
  10. Ensures the school is in compliance with California State Licensing and the Los Angeles Public Health Department.
  11. Assists the School Chaplain with weekly Children’s Chapel

The parish expects that the initial job description and goals can be fulfilled through the following time allocation, totaling 30-35 hours per week, dependent on school demands.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 24 units in Early Childhood Education.
  • Administration and Supervision courses as required by NAEYC accreditation and California State Licensing.
  • Significant administrative and supervisory experience (highly preferred).
  • Employee must meet all requirements of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles for employment.
    • Including but not limited to, a Background check, classes for the Prevention of Sexual Misconduct and reporting of Child and Elder Abuse.

Benefits and Compensation:

Our competitive compensation package is based on Education and years of experience in school administration. Salary is based on an average of 30-35 hours per work week.  This is paid bimonthly for twelve (12) months.

  • The church provides benefits (Medical, Dental, Life, Long-term disability, Short-term disability and Unemployment insurance in accordance with Diocesan policy, unless waived by the employee.
  • Time off is essential for healthy ministry. Vacation time, in keeping with this position, will occur during regularly scheduled school holidays unless otherwise approved by the Rector.
  • Contribution to Church Pension Fund (403B)
  • 403B Match (up to 4% of your contributions)
  • Additionally, the Director is allowed eight (8) sick days and two (2) personal days per Academic school year.
